The many islands of the Venetian lagoon over the centuries assumed increasing commercial, social and military importance until they became the famous Republic of Venice. Glassmaking there, already present in Roman times, developed as successfully as the history of the Serenissima, and with it came specialization in both the various techniques of manufacture and the characteristic tools used, which in the case of blown glass are still in use.
